THE SPOTLIGHT FEATURING SUSAN EKPOH

Hello, Amazing People,

Remember last month where I launched the Spotlight with Diusor? If you did not read it, then you can check it out here .

This is the second edition and on the spotlight today is Susan Ekpoh who is a pilot and experiential traveller who seeks to tread off-beaten paths, and chronicles her experiences here in hopes of inspiring others to explore.

One similarity between Susan and I is that she is also on a 25before25 Journey, though hers is to do 25 unique things before she turns 25 and her list is quite adventurous and amazing. I had a great conversation with Susan and below is how our conversation went.

INTRODUCE YOURSELF
My name is Susan Ekpoh. I’m a traveller who seeks to tread off beaten paths, life lover and adventure junkie.
WHAT DOES TRAVELLING MEAN TO YOU?
Travel is a lot of things to me. With almost every journey I gain a new perspective on life. Travel is therapy and freedom. I feel most alive when I’m travelling.

DID BEING A PILOT INSPIRE YOUR LOVE FOR TRAVELLING?
Actually, it’s the other way round. Travel & adventure inspired me to become a pilot.
YOU RECENTLY EXPLORED 8 NORTHERN NIGERIAN STATES IN 2 WEEKS; HOW DID YOU DO THAT AND WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM THAT?
A lot of perseverance but it was all worth it in the end. I remember being so frustrated one day that I cried in a Keke Napep but I had the best set of travel buddies. The biggest lesson was realizing there is unity in our diversity. Also, we should go beyond “our part of Nigeria”, so many stereotypes we hear about Northern Nigeria are untrue.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESTINATION AND WHY?
Seychelles. For the first time in my life, I wasn’t harassed for what I wore, and the island is a matriarchal society.

YOU ARE ALSO ON A JOURNEY ON 25BEFORE25; WHAT INSPIRED THAT AND WHAT IS THE GOAL?
In 2016 I almost died, my 25th birthday wasn’t assured. When I recovered I decided to do a bucket list of the things I’d have missed out on. My bucket list comprises of the things I learnt in recovery. So I’m hoping other people who are going through dark times can find light on my list.
WOW! WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?
-Explore 8 Nigerian Northern States as a Christian woman which I have done.
-Found the courage to fight my fear of water by snorkelling with sharks in the Indian Ocean which you can watch here
-Organize an Online fundraiser for the StandtoEndRape Initiative
-Go on a road trip through South Africa’s wine route road trip with friends.
-Learn to ride a motorbike
-Train to run and complete a half marathon in Kenya
-Bungee jump at Victoria Falls
-Eat 25 ”bizarre” delicacies on the road.

I hope that you have enjoyed this post and hope it inspires you to live more and create your own unique bucket-list. You too can also be on the Spotlight just like Susan, simply reach out to me here .
